The Quick Answer

Most Ohio gyms and studios start with general liability for member injuries on the premises, then add professional liability for the instruction and training you provide, which general liability may not cover. Property and equipment coverage protects racks, machines, reformers and your build-out. Participant waivers aren't a substitute for insurance. Studios with kids' or teen programs may need abuse and molestation coverage. Add EPLI for staff and workers' comp through the Ohio BWC. eGoodwin Insurance is an independent agency in Marion and Powell that compares multiple insurance companies. Call (740) 387-8335.

Ohio Fitness Insurance, The Short Version

People push their limits in your space. Your coverage should be ready for that.

A strength gym in Marion, a yoga studio in Worthington, a pilates studio in Dublin and an independent trainer working with clients across Powell and Lewis Center all share the same core risk: people exercising hard, under your guidance, on your equipment. Most days that goes fine. The day it doesn't is the day the policy matters.

We're an independent agency, which means we represent multiple insurance companies. We shop your coverage across several carriers, compare what comes back, and explain it in plain English. We work for you, not an insurance company. Mark Goodwin has been a licensed insurance professional since 1990, and our offices in Marion and Powell work with fitness businesses across Ohio.

The core is usually general liability for injuries on your premises, like a member who trips over a kettlebell in the hallway, and professional liability for injuries tied to the instruction itself, like a client hurt following a trainer's program. General liability may not respond to that second kind of claim, so many studios carry both.

Waivers help, but they don't replace insurance. A signed waiver may not stop a claim, and you still need a policy to pay for your defense. If you run kids' or teen classes, camps or sports training, abuse and molestation coverage may be needed, because many policies exclude those claims. Nothing on this page is legal advice.

What a gym or studio actually needs. In the order it matters.

Start with liability for your space and your instruction, then add your equipment, your team and your programs.

Liability

General Liability

Helps with injuries on your premises, like a member who slips in the locker room or trips over equipment, plus defense costs. Landlords usually want a certificate, and it's the base of almost every fitness program.

Core
Prof. Liability

Professional Liability for Trainers

Covers claims tied to the instruction itself: a client injured following a program, a form cue or a stretch. General liability may not cover that. Professional liability can cover the studio and, depending on the policy, employed instructors.

Core
Equipment

Property & Equipment

Racks, machines, reformers, bikes, mirrors, sound systems and your build-out. Property coverage can protect them from covered causes like fire, theft and storm damage, and business income helps if a covered loss closes the doors.

Youth programs
Abuse

Abuse & Molestation Coverage

If you run kids' or teen classes, camps or sports training, this coverage may be needed. Many general liability policies exclude abuse and molestation claims. Carriers often ask about background checks and supervision policies.

Your team
EPLI

Employment Practices Liability

Responds to claims like wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment. Studios with front-desk staff and employed instructors should consider EPLI.

Ohio rule
BWC

Workers' Comp Through the BWC

Ohio is a monopolistic state, so workers' comp comes through the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC), not private carriers. We help you coordinate and review it, and look at stop-gap employer's liability for what BWC doesn't cover.

Cyber

Cyber Liability

Membership software, auto-billing and stored card data all carry breach risk. Cyber liability can help with notification, forensic and legal costs, depending on the policy.

Extra limits
Umbrella

Commercial Umbrella

Adds another layer over your general liability and employer's liability limits. Larger gyms, studios with heavy class volume and those running youth programs often look at higher limits.

Not a substitute
Waivers

A Signed Waiver Alone

Participant waivers are useful, but they aren't insurance. A waiver may not stop every claim, and you still need a policy to pay for defense and any settlement. Have an attorney review your waiver language.

Independent trainers on your floor?

Contractors, employees and renters each need a different setup. Tell us how your trainers work and we'll check the gaps, then shop it across several carriers. Free, no pressure.

Trainers, Waivers & Youth Programs

Three questions every studio owner should ask.

These are the gaps we see most often in fitness programs. It's general information, not legal advice.

Are my trainers covered?

It depends on how they work with you. Employed instructors may be covered under the studio's professional liability, depending on the policy. Independent contractors and trainers who rent space usually need their own coverage, and many studios ask them for a certificate of insurance naming the studio as an additional insured. Tell us how your trainers are set up and we'll check that the pieces line up.

Why a waiver isn't enough

A well-written waiver is good practice, and an attorney should review yours. But a waiver may not stop a claim, it may not hold up for every type of injury, and it doesn't pay for a lawyer. Insurance is what pays your defense costs and any settlement, up to your limits. Use both.

Kids, teens and youth programs

Youth classes, summer camps and sports training add a different kind of exposure. Many general liability policies exclude abuse and molestation claims, so separate abuse and molestation coverage may be needed if you work with minors. Carriers often ask about background checks, supervision ratios and written policies, and having those in place may help with eligibility.

Studios we work with. From solo trainers to full gyms.

Ohio fitness studio insurance questions. Straight answers.

What insurance does a gym or fitness studio need in Ohio?

Most studios start with general liability and professional liability, then add property and equipment coverage, business income and EPLI.

If you run youth programs, abuse and molestation coverage may be needed. If you have employees, workers' comp comes through the Ohio BWC. What you actually need depends on your classes, staff and space.

What's the difference between general liability and professional liability for a studio?

General liability helps with injuries on your premises, like a member who trips in the hallway. Professional liability covers claims tied to the instruction itself, like a client injured following a trainer's program.

General liability may not respond to instruction-related claims, so many studios carry both.

Do I still need insurance if every member signs a waiver?

Yes. Participant waivers are useful, but they aren't a substitute for coverage. A waiver may not stop a claim and doesn't pay for your defense.

Insurance pays defense costs and any settlement, up to your limits. Have an attorney review your waiver language, and keep the insurance in place. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are my independent trainers covered by the studio's policy?

Often not. Employed instructors may be covered under the studio's professional liability, depending on the policy, but independent contractors and trainers who rent space usually need their own coverage.

Many studios ask contractors for a certificate of insurance naming the studio as an additional insured. We can help you set those requirements.

I'm a personal trainer. What coverage do I need?

Most independent trainers carry professional liability for their instruction and general liability for injuries and property damage. Studios and gyms where you train may ask for a certificate naming them as additional insured.

If you train clients in their homes or outdoors, tell us, because where you work can affect the coverage.

Do I need abuse and molestation coverage?

If you work with minors through kids' classes, camps or sports training, it may be needed. Many general liability policies exclude abuse and molestation claims.

Carriers often ask about background checks, supervision and written policies. We'll check whether your current policy excludes these claims and what options exist.

Is my gym equipment covered if it's damaged or stolen?

It can be, under your property coverage, for covered causes like fire, theft and storm damage. Check that your limit reflects what it would cost to replace your racks, machines and reformers today.

Sudden mechanical or electrical breakdown is usually a separate coverage, so ask us about equipment breakdown too.

How does workers' comp work for my Ohio crew or staff?

Ohio is a monopolistic workers' comp state. Employers get workers' comp coverage through the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC), not from private insurance companies, so we don't sell a private comp policy for your Ohio operations.

What we do is help you coordinate and review your BWC coverage alongside the rest of your program, and look at stop-gap employer's liability, which is often added to a business policy to help with lawsuits over employee injuries that fall outside the BWC system. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does fitness studio insurance cost?

It ranges too widely for one honest number. A solo trainer and a full gym with open hours, classes and youth programs are very different risks.

Your class types, member count, staff, equipment, space and claims history all move the price. Because we're an independent agency, we shop your coverage across several carriers and compare.
