eGoodwin Insurance began in Marion, where Mark Goodwin took over his father's local family agency. He has been a licensed insurance professional since 1990. As more of our clients built lives in Powell, Dublin, Lewis Center and the north Columbus suburbs, a second office here made sense. It keeps us close to the families and businesses we serve in this part of Ohio. Mark is part of this community, too: he serves on the board of the Powell Chamber of Commerce, where he is a past president, and on the board of the Powell Development Corporation.

Insure to rebuild cost, not the sale price

Your dwelling limit should equal what it would cost to rebuild the house today, not the market value or what you paid. Larger homes with custom finishes, stone and open layouts are easy to under-insure with a basic estimate. We recalculate the number with you on every home policy, and ask about extended replacement cost where it's available.

Finished basements and water backup

A lot of Powell homes have finished basements with carpet, drywall, an office or a family room below grade. Water that backs up through a sewer or drain, or overflows when a sump pump fails, is usually excluded from a standard homeowners policy unless you add a water backup endorsement. Pick a limit that matches what's actually down there. The same applies to condo and renters policies.

Ohio storms and winter

Severe spring and summer storms bring straight-line winds, hail and the occasional tornado, and winter brings frozen pipes, ice dams and heavy snow. Those are typically covered perils, subject to your deductible. Some policies carry a separate wind/hail deductible figured as a percentage of the dwelling limit, so know your number before storm season.

Flooding near the Olentangy and Scioto rivers

Powell sits between the Olentangy River to the east and the Scioto River to the west, and smaller creeks can rise fast in heavy rain. Standard homeowners policies don't cover flood. A flood policy is a separate purchase, NFIP policies generally have a 30-day waiting period, and lenders require it for homes in high-risk zones. Check your zone instead of assuming.

Commuters, teen drivers and the umbrella

Ohio's auto minimum is 25/50/25: $25,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 of property damage. Ohio is an at-fault state, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and PIP are optional. With daily commutes on SR-315, US-23 and I-270, and new drivers joining the policy, the minimum rarely matches what a Powell household has at stake. Higher auto limits plus an umbrella policy is often one of the best values on the page.
