The Quick Answer

The two policies you already own do less than you think. Your auto policy generally extends liability to a **towed trailer only while it is hitched**, and never covers the trailer's own damage. Your homeowners policy extends only to **small, low-powered craft** and may not answer a liability claim on the water. A **motorhome** is a registered vehicle that needs at least Ohio's **25/50/25 liability**, like a car, plus **vacation liability** for when you are parked at a campground. **Boats, pontoons and personal watercraft** on **Delaware Lake, Alum Creek Lake and Hoover Reservoir** need their own policy, and marinas and lenders commonly set requirements. **Fuel spill and wreck removal** belong in the package. Through an Ohio winter, **storage or lay-up options** can keep comprehensive in force so a parked rig or boat stays protected against theft, fire and storm damage. **eGoodwin Insurance** is an independent agency in Marion and Powell that shops multiple carriers. Ohio RV & Boat Insurance, The Short Version

## Two policies you already own. Neither one covers the toys.

Here is the assumption that costs owners the most: "the truck's insured and the house is insured, so the stuff they tow and store must be too." Your [auto policy](https://egoodwininsurance.com/auto-insurance) generally lends its liability to a trailer **only while it is hitched**, and never covers the trailer's own damage. Your [homeowners policy](https://egoodwininsurance.com/home-insurance) extends a little coverage to small, low-powered craft, and usually stops at anything with a real motor, especially once it leaves the driveway.

So the toys get their own coverage, matched to what they are. A **motorhome** is a vehicle and a house at once: liability at or above Ohio's 25/50/25 minimum because it is registered like a car, physical damage because it is a major asset, and **vacation liability** for the nights you spend parked at a campground. A **travel trailer** or fifth wheel needs its own physical damage policy for storms, theft from the storage lot and fire. A **boat or pontoon** on Delaware Lake, Alum Creek Lake or Hoover Reservoir needs its own policy, often shaped by the marina and the lender, and the smart package includes **fuel spill and wreck removal**.

Ohio weather works every season. Spring and summer bring severe storms, straight-line winds, hail and the occasional tornado. Winter brings hard freezes and heavy snow on whatever is parked outside. That is why comprehensive on a stored rig or boat is the coverage that quietly earns its premium all year, and why we would rather adjust it for storage than see you cancel it.

Tell us what is in the driveway, the storage lot and the dock. We are an **independent agency**, so we shop your RV, boat, auto and home across several carriers and compare. Combining policies may lower what you pay.

## What actually covers the toys. And what quietly doesn't.

Different machines, different rules. The pattern is the same: the required part is small and the useful part is optional.

Required by law

25/50/25

### Motorhome Liability

A motorhome is a registered vehicle, so it needs at least Ohio's auto liability minimum. Worth going well above it: a big rig at highway speed on I-71 or US-23 does not produce small accidents, and the state minimum was not built with that kind of weight in mind.

Strongly recommended

Comp & Collision

### Physical Damage

Repairs or replaces your rig. Required by any lender on a financed RV, and the only thing standing between hail, theft or a falling branch and your wallet. A rig parked outside through an Ohio storm season takes its chances.

Ask about this

Vacation

### Vacation Liability

Covers incidents at the campsite, where auto liability was never designed to go. The tripped hookup cord, the dog, the awning on a weekend at an Ohio state park. Some policies include a small limit, some include none, and some campgrounds ask you to carry it.

If it's home

Full-Timer

### Full-Timer's Coverage

Once the rig is your residence, a recreational policy is the wrong product. Ask us about full-timer options that do what your homeowners policy used to do: real personal liability, guest medical, and belongings limits that match reality.

Read this line

TLR

### Total Loss Replacement

The alternative to being paid depreciated value on a fast-depreciating asset. On an eligible newer rig, where available, TLR replaces it with a comparable new one instead of writing you a check that does not clear the loan. The most consequential line on the policy.

Off-season

Storage

### Storage Coverage

Ask about storage and lay-up options instead of cancelling for the winter. The goal is keeping comprehensive in force against theft, fire and storm damage while the rig or boat sits from fall to spring. Cancelling can leave a gap in your insurance history.

Not covered

Unhitched

### Your Trailer, Most Of The Time

Auto liability follows the trailer while hitched and covers only what you damage. The trailer itself, its contents, and every hour it spends parked or stored are not your auto policy's problem. This is the most common gap we find.

Not covered

Motorized

### Your Boat, On Homeowners

Homeowners extends to small, low-powered craft, typically with length and horsepower caps, often only on your property. A kayak, maybe. A pontoon or anything with a real engine, usually no, and it may not answer a liability claim out on Alum Creek Lake at all.

Watch this

Cleanup

### Fuel Spill & Wreck Removal

If your boat sinks, removing it is your bill. If fuel escapes, the environmental cleanup is your bill. Neither has anything to do with what the boat was worth, so a total loss can still cost you. Marinas name these specifically for a reason.

### Got a trailer you assumed was covered?

Most people do. It takes about five minutes to find out what your auto policy actually does for it, and it is free either way.

RVs, Motorhomes & Trailers

## An RV is a vehicle and a house. Insure both halves.

That dual nature is the whole reason RV insurance is its own product rather than a line on your auto policy. Get the vehicle half wrong and you are underinsured on the road. Get the house half wrong and you are underinsured everywhere you park.

### Motorhomes versus trailers

A **motorhome** is a registered motor vehicle, so Ohio's **25/50/25** liability minimum applies, the same as a car: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and PIP are optional in Ohio and worth considering. Given the size and weight of a motorhome, the state minimum is a starting point, not a plan.

A **travel trailer or fifth wheel** is not self-propelled, so no separate liability policy is required and your tow vehicle covers the hitched liability. What people hear is "covered." What is true is "covered for one narrow thing during one narrow window." The trailer's own damage, its contents, and every unhitched hour need physical damage coverage of their own.

### The parked half nobody prices

When the rig stops moving it becomes a residence, and residence risks show up: guests, dogs, awnings, hookups, and everything inside. **Vacation liability** handles the campsite. **Personal belongings** coverage handles the contents, and the default limit is usually modest, often a couple thousand dollars, which is nothing next to what people actually travel with once you add electronics, gear, and tools.

If the rig **is** the residence, everything changes. A **full-timer's policy** is the correct product because there is no homeowners policy standing behind you anymore. Plenty of people who sell the house and hit the road never switch off the recreational policy they bought for weekends.

### Ohio camping season, and the months after it

Most Ohio rigs see a busy stretch from spring through fall, with weekends at state park campgrounds and longer trips out of state, then sit for the winter. Plan for both halves. On the road, make sure liability and vacation liability are real limits. In storage, keep comprehensive in force, winterize the plumbing, and tell us where the rig is kept. A covered storage building, a gravel lot and your own driveway are not the same risk to an underwriter.

Boats, Pontoons, PWC & ATVs

## Lake days on Alum Creek and Hoover. Insured like you mean it.

Ohio has plenty of water close to home. Delaware Lake, Alum Creek Lake and Hoover Reservoir all draw boaters, pontoon owners and anglers within an easy drive of Marion, Delaware, Powell and Westerville. Whatever you launch, it needs its own policy.

### Who actually sets the requirements

**Marinas** commonly want proof of liability at a set limit before they rent you a dock or slip, and some want to be named on the policy. Bring us the dock agreement and we will match it. **Lenders** require physical damage on a financed boat and will want to be the loss payee. Lake rules, such as horsepower limits, vary by body of water, so tell us where you boat.

The other half has nothing to do with paperwork. If your boat sinks, **wreck removal** can be your responsibility. If fuel gets out, **environmental cleanup** can be your responsibility. Neither bill is capped by what the boat was worth, which is why "it's an old boat, it isn't worth insuring" is a mistake in reasoning rather than a budget decision.

### Pontoons and family boats

Pontoons are built for a crowd: kids, grandparents, friends and the dog. That is a lot of people on board, so **liability and medical payments** deserve real limits. Ask about coverage for the trailer, the motor, and gear like electronics, tubes and fishing equipment, and about **uninsured boater** coverage in case the other boat has none.

### Winter lay-up

From fall to spring most Ohio boats sit on a trailer, in a storage building or on a lift. Many boat policies offer a lay-up or storage period, and comprehensive can stay in force for theft, fire and storm damage while the boat sits. Many policies also expect proper winterization, so ask us how yours treats freeze damage to the engine before the first hard freeze.

### Jet skis, ATVs, and the rest of the garage

**Personal watercraft** deserve more respect than they get. They are fast, and they are often handed to a friend who has never operated one, which is a liability profile out of proportion to the price of the machine.

**ATVs, dirt bikes and side-by-sides** need their own coverage too. Your homeowners policy generally will not respond once they leave the property, and sometimes not even on it. Coverage can handle trail liability, theft and the trailer itself. Tell us where you actually ride, because private land, a riding park and public trails are not identical to an underwriter. Street bikes belong on a [motorcycle policy](https://egoodwininsurance.com/motorcycle-insurance).

## RV, boat & recreational questions. Straight answers.

Is RV insurance required in Ohio?

For a motorhome, yes. It is a registered motor vehicle, so it needs at least the same 25/50/25 liability Ohio requires on a car: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Given how much a motorhome weighs, the minimum is a floor, not a plan.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and PIP are optional in Ohio, and both are worth considering on a rig. Towed trailers work differently. See the next question.

Doesn't my auto policy already cover my travel trailer?

Only for one narrow thing during one narrow window: while hitched, your tow vehicle's liability generally extends to the trailer.

The trailer's own physical damage, such as hail, wind damage, theft from the storage lot or fire, is not covered by your auto policy, hitched or not. A travel trailer or fifth wheel needs its own policy, and most owners find that out at claim time.

What is vacation liability, and do I need it?

Your motorhome's auto-style liability is built for driving. Vacation liability fills the gap while you are parked and living in it: the campfire that spreads, or the guest who trips on the step at a state park campsite.

Some policies include a small default limit, some none, and some campgrounds ask for it. If you spend real nights in the rig, carry it on purpose.

Do I need a full-timer's policy?

If the RV is your residence, ask us about it.

Full-timer coverage is designed to do the jobs a homeowners policy used to do: broader personal liability, medical payments for guests, and personal property limits that reflect that everything you own is inside. A recreational policy on a full-time rig is a claim dispute waiting to happen.

If my RV is totaled, what does the policy actually pay?

It depends on which valuation you bought. Actual cash value pays depreciated worth.

Agreed value pays a number you locked in. Total loss replacement, where available on eligible newer rigs, replaces yours with a comparable new one. On a financed rig, that choice can decide whether the payout clears the loan.

Should I cancel my RV or boat policy over the winter?

Usually not. An Ohio off-season means months of the rig or boat parked and unattended through snow, ice, wind and the occasional break-in.

Comprehensive is what answers theft, fire, storm and falling-tree damage to something in storage. Ask about storage or lay-up options that keep comprehensive in force while it sits. That is usually a better answer than cancelling, which can also leave a gap in your insurance history.

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat or pontoon?

Barely. Homeowners policies extend limited coverage to small, low-powered craft, typically with length and horsepower caps, and often only on your property.

A kayak, maybe. A pontoon or anything with a real motor, usually no. The liability side is the bigger gap, because a homeowners policy may not answer a claim out on the water at all.

Do marinas or lenders require boat insurance?

Often, yes. Marinas commonly want proof of liability at a set limit before they rent you a dock or slip, and some want to be named on the policy. Lenders require physical damage coverage on a financed boat and want to be listed as loss payee.

Bring us the dock agreement or loan paperwork and we will match the policy to it.

What does boat insurance cover on Delaware Lake, Alum Creek Lake or Hoover Reservoir?

A boat or pontoon policy typically covers physical damage to the hull, motor and trailer, liability for injuring someone or damaging their property on the water, medical payments, and uninsured boater coverage.

Ask about fuel spill liability and wreck removal too. Lake rules, such as horsepower limits, vary, so tell us where you boat and we will make sure the coverage fits.

What are fuel spill liability and wreck removal?

If your boat sinks or burns, you can be responsible for raising the wreck and cleaning up the fuel, and neither bill is small.

Fuel spill liability and wreck removal coverage answer for exactly that, which is why marinas often ask for them. Neither is tied to what the boat was worth, so they matter even on an older boat.

Do I need insurance for a jet ski or personal watercraft?

Practically, yes. Lenders and many marinas require it, and personal watercraft are fast and often handed to a friend who has never operated one.

That is a liability profile out of proportion to the machine's price. We can quote it alongside your boat, RV and auto.

What about ATVs, dirt bikes and side-by-sides?

They need their own coverage too. Once they leave your property, your homeowners policy generally will not respond, and sometimes not even on it.

Coverage can handle trail liability, theft, physical damage and the trailer hauling them. Tell us what you ride and where, and we will shop it across several carriers along with your auto and home.
