Inland Marine, The Short Version

## Your property policy lives at one address. Your equipment doesn't.

A commercial property policy is built around a building: the things inside it, at that address. But a lot of business property spends its life somewhere else. A skid steer on a job site in Delaware. A trailer of tools parked overnight in Powell. Materials waiting to be installed in a customer's home. A laptop and projector in the back seat on the way to a client. That's what **inland marine** insurance is for.

The name is historical. Marine insurance covered cargo on ships, and inland marine grew out of it to cover goods moving over land. Today it's a flexible family of coverages, often called **floaters**, for property that's mobile, in transit or hard to fit on a standard property form.

It's most familiar to **contractors and construction companies**, whose equipment and materials move constantly and take a beating. But it's just as useful for businesses that ship goods, landscapers with mowers and trailers, IT and audio-visual pros with mobile gear, and **medical and aesthetic offices** with expensive devices like imaging systems and lasers.

We're an **independent agency**, so we represent **multiple insurance companies**. Several types of inland marine coverage exist, some built for small businesses and some for larger operations. We'll help you figure out which fits, compare options across several carriers and explain the differences in plain English.

## What inland marine can cover. Property that moves, or sits off-site.

Most businesses need one or two of these, not all of them. What's covered, and how, depends on the policy.

Most common

Equipment

### Contractor's equipment

Excavators, skid steers, lifts, generators, compressors and other mobile equipment, on a job site, in the yard or between the two. It can be scheduled item by item or covered on a blanket limit.

Trades

Tools

### Tools & small equipment

Hand and power tools, ladders and gear that ride in the truck and sit on job sites. Often covered on a blanket limit, sometimes with a per-item maximum.

Shipping

Transit

### Property in transit

Goods and materials while they're being shipped or hauled, whether on your own vehicles or a carrier's. Useful for businesses that move product across Ohio or beyond.

Installers

Installation

### Installation floaters

Materials and equipment you're installing, like HVAC units, cabinets, fixtures or windows, from the time they leave your shop until the job is accepted.

Off-site

Valuables

### Valuable equipment off-premises

Laptops, cameras, audio-visual gear, instruments and other high-value items that leave the office, plus property in the care of others, depending on the policy.

Practices

Medical

### Medical & aesthetic equipment

Imaging systems, lasers and specialty devices are expensive and sometimes move between locations. A floater can give them broader, dedicated coverage.

## Who needs inland marine. Anyone whose gear goes out the door.

How It Fits

## How inland marine fits with your other coverage.

Inland marine fills the gaps between your other policies. Here's where it sits.

### Inland marine vs. commercial property

[Commercial property](https://egoodwininsurance.com/policies/business-property-insurance/) covers your building and what's inside it at the listed location. Many property policies limit or exclude property away from the premises. Inland marine picks up where that leaves off.

### Inland marine vs. commercial auto

Commercial auto covers the truck or van itself and liability for driving it. It generally doesn't cover the tools, equipment or cargo inside. Inland marine covers what's in the vehicle, and trailers or equipment that don't qualify as autos, depending on the policy.

### Scheduled vs. blanket

Big-ticket items are usually **scheduled**, listed one by one with a value. Smaller tools and gear are often covered on a **blanket** limit. Keep the schedule current as you buy and sell equipment, so a new machine isn't left off.

### Replacement cost vs. actual cash value

Some policies pay what it costs to replace an item new. Others pay **actual cash value**, which subtracts depreciation. For older equipment the difference can be large, so ask which one you have. Also ask about leased or rented equipment, since some contracts make you responsible for it.

## Inland marine questions. Straight answers.

What is inland marine insurance?

It's coverage for business property that moves or sits away from your location, like contractor's equipment, tools, property in transit, materials being installed and valuable equipment used off-site.

The name comes from marine cargo insurance. It has nothing to do with boats.

Doesn't my commercial property policy cover my equipment?

At your listed location, it may. But many commercial property policies limit or exclude property while it's away from the premises, on a job site, in a vehicle or in transit.

Inland marine is designed for property that moves. We'll compare your current policy with what you own and where it goes.

Does my commercial auto policy cover the tools in my truck?

Generally not. Commercial auto covers the vehicle and your liability for driving it. The tools, equipment and materials inside are usually covered separately, which is where inland marine comes in.

What is an installation floater?

It covers materials and equipment you're installing for a customer, like HVAC units, cabinets, fixtures or windows, while they're in transit, stored at the site and being installed, until the work is accepted.

It's common for contractors and trades who install the materials they supply.

Can I cover medical or aesthetic equipment with inland marine?

Often, yes. Imaging systems, lasers and other specialty devices can be covered on an equipment floater, which may give broader coverage than a standard property policy, especially if the equipment moves between locations.

Coverage varies, so we'll look at your equipment and how you use it.

Should I schedule my equipment or use a blanket limit?

Expensive items are usually scheduled, with each piece listed at its value. Smaller tools are often covered on a blanket limit, sometimes with a per-item maximum.

Many businesses use both. The key is keeping the schedule up to date as you buy and sell equipment.

What does inland marine usually not cover?

Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, and on many forms mechanical breakdown are common exclusions. Theft from an unattended vehicle may have conditions, depending on the policy.

Read the exclusions with us before you buy, so there are no surprises at claim time.
