The Quick Answer

An Ohio motorcycle needs its own policy with at least **25/50/25 liability**, the same minimum Ohio requires of a car. Your auto policy does not cover it. Ohio is an **at-fault state**, and **uninsured/underinsured motorist** coverage and **PIP** are **optional** here, so riders have to choose to add them. UM/UIM is the one we size first, because on a bike you have no steel around you. Ohio's riding season runs from spring into fall, and most bikes are **stored for winter**, so ask about a **lay-up option** that keeps **comprehensive** in force against theft, fire and storm damage instead of cancelling. Round out the policy with **custom parts coverage** (defaults are small), **safety apparel** for your gear, and **guest passenger liability** if anyone rides behind you. **eGoodwin Insurance**, the **independent agency** of Mark Goodwin in Marion and Powell, represents multiple insurance companies and quotes riders free at **[(740) 387-8335](tel:+17403878335)**.

Ohio Motorcycle Insurance, The Short Version

## Ohio gives riders a real season. The policy should fit all twelve months of it.

Start with what makes riding here good: spring and fall back roads through Marion and Delaware counties, summer evening loops around Delaware Lake or Alum Creek Lake, and a weekend run up US-23 when the weather cooperates. Then the snow comes and most bikes go into the garage until spring. A policy built for that rhythm protects the bike on the road and in storage.

Now the part that shapes every recommendation on this page. Ohio requires **25/50/25 liability** on a motorcycle, the same as a car, and Ohio is an **at-fault state**. But **uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and PIP are optional** here. In a car, a driver with no insurance or bare minimum limits is an annoyance. On a bike, you are the crumple zone, and the driver who turned left in front of you being underinsured turns a bad day into a financial one. That's why **UM/UIM** is the first thing we size on a rider policy.

Winter is the other piece. It's tempting to cancel when the bike is parked for months, but a stored bike can still be stolen or damaged, and a coverage gap can raise what you pay later. Ask us about a **lay-up or reduced-coverage option** that keeps comprehensive alive through the off-season.

The rest is making the policy match the bike you actually ride: **custom parts coverage** above the small default, **safety apparel** for the gear, and **guest passenger liability** if anyone rides with you. We're an independent agency, so we shop all of that across several insurance companies and compare. Bundled with the car and the house, it is often cheaper than riders expect.

## What a rider policy needs. And the three gaps nobody mentions.

The required part is small. The parts that decide whether a bad day ruins you are all optional.

Required by law

30/60/25

### Liability

The same 25/50/25 Ohio requires of a car, on the bike's own policy. Covers what you do to others' bodies and property, plus defense. On a vehicle this exposed, we treat the minimum as the floor for the conversation, not the recommendation.

Optional in Ohio. Add it.

UM / UIM

### Uninsured Motorist

Ohio doesn't require it, so it's easy to leave off. Plenty of drivers carry only the 25/50/25 minimum, some carry nothing, and on a bike you have no steel around you. This is the coverage that pays when the driver who turned left in front of you cannot.

Strongly recommended

Med Pay

### Medical Payments

Liability pays the other person. PIP and medical payments pay you, regardless of fault. Both are optional in Ohio. Inexpensive, and on two wheels even a modest get-off can mean an ambulance.

If you'd miss it

Comp & Collision

### Physical Damage

Repairs or replaces the bike. Comprehensive matters more than riders think: motorcycles are easy targets for thieves, and summer thunderstorms bring hail and falling limbs. Your garage is not coverage, and neither is a cover in the driveway.

Lay-Up

### Winter Lay-Up

Most Ohio bikes sit from late fall to spring. Ask whether a lay-up or reduced-coverage option is available for those months instead of cancelling. The goal is keeping comprehensive alive against theft, fire and storm damage. Cancelling creates a coverage gap that can raise what you pay later.

### Safety Course Discount

Many insurance companies offer a discount for completing an approved motorcycle safety course. Because we compare multiple carriers, we can look for the ones that reward it. Safer, and potentially cheaper to insure. Take it.

Your Mods

### Custom Parts & Equipment

Standard policies assume a stock bike and cap accessories at a small default. Exhaust, bars, bags, seat, paint, lighting, engine work. Add up what you have spent past stock, then ask us about raising the limit to match.

Usually a gap

Your Gear

### Safety Apparel

Helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, armor. It is not part of the bike, so the bike's coverage does not replace it. A full kit can run into four figures, and one get-off can destroy all of it at once, in the same crash that bent the frame.

### Guest Passenger Liability

Some rider policies limit or exclude passenger liability, or make it an add-on. The person on the back is the most likely to be badly hurt in your crash. If you ever carry anyone, this line is not optional.

### Is your bike insured as the bike you actually built?

Mods, gear, and the passenger line are the three we find wrong most often. Send us your declarations page and we will read it with you, free.

The Ohio Rules That Matter

## Four things that change how a claim goes here.

Ohio's rules for riders are simple on paper. What they leave optional is what decides what a claim pays.

### 1. 25/50/25 applies to your bike too

Ohio requires **25/50/25** liability on every motor vehicle, motorcycles included: $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. Ohio raised those limits from 12.5/25/7.5 in December 2013. You also need proof of financial responsibility whenever you ride. Questions about the rules themselves? The Ohio Department of Insurance consumer hotline is 800-686-1526.

### 2. Ohio is an at-fault state

The rider or driver who causes a crash is responsible for the damage, and their liability coverage pays. That cuts both ways. If you cause it, your limits stand between the claim and your savings. If someone else causes it, you're relying on their coverage, which may be the bare minimum or nothing at all.

### 3. UM/UIM and PIP are your call

Ohio doesn't require **uninsured/underinsured motorist** coverage or **PIP**. That makes them easy to skip and expensive to miss. On a bike, the coverage most likely to pay for your hospital stay is your own UM/UIM, stacked with PIP or medical payments and your health insurance. We size that stack first.

### 4. Your auto policy is not helping

A motorcycle is never covered by your car's policy. It needs its own. The upside of doing it properly: bikes often rate cheaper than people expect, and bundling the bike with the [auto](https://egoodwininsurance.com/auto-insurance) and [home](https://egoodwininsurance.com/home-insurance) policies may qualify you for a multi-policy discount. One call, one independent agency, several carriers compared for the whole garage.

### Let it lapse at some point? Get it back in force today.

A gap can raise your rate and leaves a parked bike exposed to theft and storm damage. One call to (740) 387-8335 starts fixing it.

## Whatever you ride. However you ride it.

A daily commuter on US-33 and a garage-queen restoration are not the same policy. Tell us which one you are.

[Daily commuters

US-23, SR-315 or I-270 every day from spring into fall, in the same traffic as everyone else. More exposure, more miles, and UM coverage matters most for you because you are surrounded by the people who cause the crashes.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

[Builds & heavily modified bikes

If your bike left stock a long time ago, the default accessory limit is not close. Custom parts and equipment coverage exists exactly for you, and it costs very little.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

[Weekend & lake-loop riders

A loop around Hoover Reservoir or Delaware Lake a few times a month, parked the rest, and stored all winter. Ask about options that keep theft and storm coverage alive without paying for road exposure you are not using.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

[Riders who carry passengers

Guest passenger liability is limited or excluded more often than riders realize. If anyone ever gets on the back, this gets checked before you ride, not after.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

[Classics & collectibles

A vintage bike is not worth its depreciated book value and should not be insured as if it were. Agreed value is the conversation, the same as it is for any collector vehicle.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

[New riders

Highest risk, lowest experience, and one of the best moves available to you is an approved motorcycle safety course. Start with real limits rather than the legal floor.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

### One call, and it's usually cheaper than you think.

You ride fewer miles than you drive, and it bundles with the car and the house. Tell us about the bike and we'll compare several carriers to quote it properly.

## Ohio rider questions. Straight answers.

Is motorcycle insurance required in Ohio?

Yes. A motorcycle is a motor vehicle, so it needs the same 25/50/25 liability Ohio requires of a car: $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage. You also need to be able to show proof of financial responsibility.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and PIP are not required in Ohio. Both are optional, and on a bike both are worth a serious look.

Does my auto policy cover my motorcycle?

No.

A motorcycle needs its own policy. Your auto policy does not extend to it. The good news is that bike policies are often cheaper than people expect, since you ride fewer miles than you drive, and bundling the bike with your auto and home may lower the whole stack.

What happens if an uninsured driver hits me?

Ohio is an at-fault state, so the other driver's liability coverage should pay. The problem is when they carry no insurance, or only the 25/50/25 minimum, and on a bike you are the crumple zone.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage steps into the at-fault driver's shoes and pays for your injuries. It's optional in Ohio, and it's the single most important optional coverage on a rider policy.

Does liability coverage pay for my own injuries?

No. Liability pays for the people you injure and the property you damage.

Your own injuries are covered by PIP or medical payments, your health insurance, and, when the other driver is at fault and uninsured or underinsured, your UM/UIM coverage. On a bike, building that injury stack deliberately matters more than on any car.

Are my custom parts and accessories covered?

Only up to a small default limit, and plenty of bikes carry real money in pipes, bars, seats, luggage, chrome and paint.

Custom parts and equipment coverage can raise that limit to match reality. Bring us the receipts, or at least an honest list, and we'll size it properly.

Is my riding gear covered?

Not automatically. Your helmet, jacket, gloves, boots and armor are not part of the motorcycle, so the bike's physical damage coverage does not replace them.

A full kit can run into four figures, and one get-off can destroy all of it at once. Ask us whether safety apparel coverage can be added to your policy.

Is my passenger covered?

Check, don't assume. Guest passenger liability covers the person on the back, the one most likely to be seriously hurt in your crash.

Some policies include it, some don't. If you ever carry anyone, make sure yours does.

Can I drop coverage over the Ohio winter?

Most Ohio bikes spend a few months in the garage, so it's a fair question. Cancelling outright is usually the wrong move: a stored bike can still be stolen, damaged in a garage fire, or crushed by a heavy snow load on an outbuilding, and a coverage gap can raise what you pay when you restart in the spring.

Instead, ask whether a lay-up or reduced-coverage option is available for the months the bike is stored. The goal is keeping comprehensive alive while you're not riding.

Will a safety course lower my rate?

It may. Many insurance companies offer a discount for completing an approved motorcycle safety course, and because we represent multiple carriers, we can look for the ones that reward it.

Either way, the course makes you a safer rider. Take it.

Do scooters and mopeds need insurance too?

If it is registered for the road, it needs liability coverage, and small displacement does not shrink the liability: a small scooter can put a pedestrian in the hospital just as a big bike can.

Tell us what you ride, whether it's a scooter for getting around campus or a touring bike, and we'll write it correctly.
