Ohio Business Insurance, The Short Version

## Good business insurance starts with what you do. Then we shop it.

A dental office in Dublin, a family medical practice in Marion, a med spa in Powell, an investor with a few duplexes in Delaware and an apartment building in Columbus: each one needs something different, and none of them needs the whole catalog. Most small businesses start with a **Business Owners Policy**, which packages general liability, commercial property and business income. From there, we add what your work actually calls for.

We're an **independent agency**, which means we represent **multiple insurance companies**. We shop your coverage across several carriers, compare what comes back, and walk you through it in plain English. In Mark's words, we help you buy insurance rather than sell it to you. Mark Goodwin has been a licensed insurance professional since 1990, and our offices in **Marion** and **Powell** work with businesses across Ohio.

Our focus is on a few kinds of clients we know well. **Dental practices**, **medical offices** and **aesthetic offices and med spas** share the same core needs: the office, the equipment, the income if you have to close, and liability for the people who walk through the door. On top of that sit **professional liability**, which we coordinate with the rest of your program, and **cyber liability**, because a patient data breach can bring notification, forensic and legal costs, and sometimes HIPAA-related regulatory response costs.

**Real estate investors and apartment owners** are the other group we work with every day. Smaller rentals often fit a [landlord policy](https://egoodwininsurance.com/landlord-insurance). Larger apartment and multifamily buildings usually move to commercial property and general liability, and a **commercial umbrella** over the portfolio is common.

Two more things shape the conversation in Ohio. The first is **weather**: severe spring and summer thunderstorms, hail, straight-line winds and the occasional tornado, then winter freezes that burst pipes. Check your property limits and any wind/hail deductible before storm season. The second is **workers' comp**. Ohio is a **monopolistic state**, so workers' comp comes through the **Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC)** rather than a private insurance company. We don't sell it, but we help you coordinate and review it, and we look at the coverage around it. Nothing on this page is legal advice.

## What a business actually needs. In the order it matters.

Start with the package, then add what your work demands: the services you provide, the data you hold, the people you employ and what you drive.

Start here

BOP

### Business Owners Policy

Bundles general liability, commercial property and business income into one package built for small businesses. It often costs less than buying the pieces separately, and for many Ohio offices and shops it's the core of the program.

Core

Liability

### General Liability

The patient who slips in your waiting room, the damage you cause at a client's site, the advertising injury claim. It helps pay defense costs as well as settlements, and it's what your landlord, lender or clients will want a certificate for.

Core

Property

### Commercial Property & Business Income

Your building or leasehold improvements, furniture, supplies and inventory, plus the income you lose while a covered loss is repaired. In Ohio, plan for spring and summer storms, hail and straight-line winds, and winter pipe freezes.

Medical & dental

Prof. Liability

### Professional Liability

General liability doesn't cover the professional services you provide. For dentists, physicians and med spa providers, professional liability is a specialized coverage. Let us coordinate it with the rest of your program so nothing falls between policies.

Patient data

Cyber

### Cyber Liability

A data breach can mean forensic work, notifying patients or customers, legal help and lost income while systems are down. For practices, some policies also help with HIPAA-related regulatory response costs. Coverage varies, so we'll go through it with you.

Ohio rule

BWC

### Workers' Compensation

Ohio is a monopolistic state, so workers' comp comes through the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC), not private carriers. We help you coordinate and review it, and look at stop-gap employer's liability to cover what BWC doesn't.

Your team

EPLI

### Employment Practices Liability

Responds to claims like wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment, which can come up in any office with staff. It's worth a conversation once you have even a few employees.

Ask us

Auto

### Commercial Auto & Fleet

Personal auto policies typically exclude most business use. Vehicles owned by the business need commercial auto, whether it's one car or a small fleet. If staff drive their own cars on your errands, ask about hired and non-owned coverage.

Extra limits

Umbrella

### Commercial Umbrella

Sits on top of your general liability, commercial auto and employer's liability limits and adds another layer when a serious claim runs past them. Common for apartment owners and practices with heavy foot traffic.

Ask us

Equipment

### Inland Marine & Equipment

Covers equipment and property that moves or doesn't fit neatly on a property policy, from imaging systems and specialty devices to tools and gear you take off-site. Worth a look when your equipment is a big part of what you own.

Ask us

Benefits

### Group Benefits

Benefits help you hire and keep good people. Tell us your headcount and what you offer today, and we'll walk you through group benefit options alongside your business coverage.

Not covered

Home Office

### A Business On Your Homeowners Policy

Business property in the house usually has a small limit, and business liability is generally excluded. A client who trips on your front step may not be a covered claim. An endorsement or a small business policy often fixes it.

### Not sure what your practice or business needs?

Fifteen minutes on what you do, who works for you and what you own. We'll tell you what matters, what you can skip, and then shop it across several carriers. Free, no pressure.

Covering Your Team

## Ohio workers' comp, in plain English.

If you have employees, this is worth reading, because Ohio handles workers' comp differently from most states. It's general information, not legal advice.

### Ohio is a monopolistic state

In most states, businesses buy workers' comp from private insurance companies. Ohio is different. It's a **monopolistic** state, which means Ohio employers get workers' comp coverage through the **Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC)**. A private agency can't sell you a workers' comp policy for your Ohio operations, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we can do is help you understand your BWC coverage, review it alongside your other policies, and make sure the rest of your program lines up with it.

### The gap around BWC: stop-gap coverage

BWC coverage pays workers' comp benefits to injured employees. In a monopolistic state, it generally doesn't include the **employer's liability** coverage that private workers' comp policies carry in most other states. That's the part that can respond if you're sued over an employee injury that falls outside the BWC system. A **stop-gap endorsement**, usually added to your general liability policy, is how many businesses fill that gap. Ask us whether yours has it.

### The rest of the people side

Once you have staff, **employment practices liability (EPLI)** is worth a conversation, because claims like wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment can come up in any office. And if you want to offer **group benefits**, we can walk you through options alongside your business coverage. On employment-law questions, talk to an employment attorney. We handle the insurance.

### Storm season is coming. Know your property numbers now.

Spring and summer storms, hail and straight-line winds, then winter pipe freezes. Some policies carry a separate wind/hail deductible, and business income limits may not have kept up. Find out before the next storm. Free review.

## Ohio business insurance questions. Straight answers.

How does workers' compensation work for an Ohio business?

Ohio is a monopolistic workers' comp state. That means Ohio employers get workers' comp coverage through the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC), not from private insurance companies.

So we don't sell a private workers' comp policy for your Ohio operations, and nobody else can either. What we can do is help you understand your BWC coverage, review it alongside the rest of your program, and coordinate the coverage that sits around it, like stop-gap employer's liability.

What is stop-gap (employer's liability) coverage, and do I need it?

Workers' comp through the BWC pays benefits to injured employees. In a monopolistic state, it generally doesn't include the employer's liability coverage that private workers' comp policies carry in most other states.

Stop-gap coverage, usually added as an endorsement to your general liability policy, can help fill that gap if you're sued over an employee injury that falls outside the BWC system. Ask us whether your current policy includes it. This is general information, not legal advice.

What insurance does a dental practice need?

Most dental offices start with a Business Owners Policy or a commercial property and general liability package that covers the space, the equipment and the income you lose if you have to close for a covered repair.

From there, practices usually look at professional liability, cyber liability for patient records, employment practices liability for the team, and coverage for high-value equipment like imaging systems and chairs. We'll walk through it with you and coordinate the pieces so they fit together.

What insurance does a medical office need?

The core is similar to any office: property, general liability and business income. What changes is the exposure that comes with treating patients and holding their records.

That's where professional liability and cyber liability come in, along with EPLI if you have staff and group benefits if you want to offer them. Tell us how your practice is set up and we'll help you build the program around it.

Do you handle malpractice coverage for doctors and dentists?

We call it professional liability, and yes, it's part of the conversation for every medical and dental office we work with.

It's a specialized coverage, so the details matter: who is covered, which services, and how it lines up with the practice's other policies. Let us coordinate it with your property, general liability and cyber coverage so there are no gaps or overlaps between them.

I run a med spa or aesthetic office. What should I watch for?

Make sure your professional liability matches the treatments you actually offer and the people who perform them. Some policies limit or exclude certain procedures.

Add new services or providers? Tell us before you start offering them, so we can check the coverage still fits. Beyond that, a med spa needs the same foundation as any office: property, general liability, business income, cyber for client records, and EPLI if you have staff.

I own rental properties and apartment buildings. How should they be insured?

It depends on the property. One- to four-unit rentals are often written on a landlord policy, which we cover on our landlord insurance page.

Larger apartment buildings and multifamily properties are usually insured on a commercial property and general liability package, often with a commercial umbrella on top. Depending on your portfolio, it may be possible to schedule several properties on one commercial policy. We'll compare the options across our carriers.

Do I need cyber insurance if I'm not a tech company?

If you hold patient or customer records, take cards, or run your business through email and cloud software, you have cyber exposure.

For a medical, dental or aesthetic office, a breach of patient data can bring forensic investigation, patient notification, legal help and, depending on the policy, some HIPAA-related regulatory response costs. Cyber liability can help pay for many of those costs. It doesn't replace your own HIPAA compliance work, and what it covers varies by policy, so we'll go through it with you.

What is a BOP, and is it enough?

A Business Owners Policy bundles general liability, commercial property and business income into one package built for small businesses, often for less than buying the pieces separately.

For many Ohio offices and shops, a BOP is the core of the program. It isn't enough by itself if you give professional advice, hold patient or customer data, have employees, drive for work, or need flood coverage.

Does my personal auto policy cover me driving for work?

Generally not. Personal auto policies typically exclude most business use, like deliveries, hauling equipment between sites or driving clients.

If the vehicle belongs to the business, it needs commercial auto. If employees drive their own cars on your errands, ask about hired and non-owned auto coverage, because their accident on your errand can become your claim.

I run my business from home. Doesn't my homeowners policy cover it?

Mostly no. Homeowners policies usually carry a small limit for business property and generally exclude business liability.

The fix is often simple: an endorsement or a small business policy. We'll tell you honestly which one fits.

What does business income coverage actually pay?

Property coverage repairs the building. Business income helps pay your rent, payroll and lost profit while that happens, after a covered loss.

In Ohio, think about spring and summer storms, hail and straight-line winds, and winter pipe freezes. Flood is excluded from most business property coverage, so if you operate near the Olentangy or Scioto River or a creek that rises in heavy rain, ask us about flood coverage too.

A client or landlord wants a certificate of insurance. What is that?

A certificate of insurance is proof of your coverage. Naming someone as an additional insured extends your liability policy to protect them for work you do for them.

Leases, lenders, property managers and larger clients ask for them all the time. Send us the request and the contract language, and we'll work to turn it around quickly.

How much does business insurance cost?

It ranges too widely for one honest number. A two-person consulting office and a multi-provider medical practice are very different risks.

What you do, your payroll, your building, your equipment, your vehicles and your claims history all move the price. Because we're an independent agency, we shop your coverage across several carriers and compare. Call us and we'll quote your actual operation.

Why use an independent agency for business insurance?

We represent multiple insurance companies, so we can compare options instead of offering one company's policy.

We work for you, not an insurance company. Mark Goodwin has been a licensed insurance professional since 1990, and we stay with you from the first quote through renewals as your business and the insurance market change.
