The Quick Answer

Ohio requires **25/50/25** liability coverage: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Ohio is an **at-fault (tort) state**, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible for the damage, and minimum limits can leave your savings and home equity exposed after a serious accident. **Uninsured/underinsured motorist** coverage and **PIP** are **not required in Ohio**, but both are worth considering. For most Ohio drivers the right policy is liability sized to what you own, UM/UIM, and **collision plus comprehensive** on any car you couldn't replace out of pocket. Comprehensive covers **hail** and falling limbs from spring and summer thunderstorms, **flood water** when creeks rise, and theft. **eGoodwin Insurance** is an **independent agency** in **Marion and Powell** that represents **multiple insurance companies**, so we shop your auto coverage across several carriers and compare. Ohio Auto Insurance, The Short Version

## The state minimum keeps you legal. It doesn't protect what you've built.

Ohio requires **25/50/25** liability limits: $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Ohio raised those minimums from 12.5/25/7.5 in December 2013, and they still run out fast. For example, a single newer pickup or SUV can be worth more than the whole $25,000 property damage limit, and a multi-car crash on I-71 or US-23 can involve several vehicles and several injured people at once.

Here's the part most drivers miss: Ohio is an **at-fault state**. If you cause an accident, you are responsible for the damage, and once your policy limits are spent, the rest can come after your savings, your home equity, and even future wages. Your liability limits are the wall between an accident and everything you own.

That's why we don't start with "what's the cheapest policy." We start with what you have to protect, then build the coverage to match: liability limits that fit your assets, **collision and comprehensive** for the cars themselves, uninsured motorist coverage (optional in Ohio, and worth carrying), and add-ons like rental and gap only where they earn their keep. Comprehensive matters here too. Spring and summer thunderstorms bring hail and straight-line winds, and creeks can flood roads fast in heavy rain.

Then we do the part a captive agent can't. We're an **independent agency**, so we shop that coverage across several insurance companies and compare, instead of fitting you into one company's box. [Bundling with your home](https://egoodwininsurance.com/home-insurance) or renters policy may lower the price further.

Want a ballpark first? Try the [auto rate estimator](https://egoodwininsurance.com/#estimator), then call [(740) 387-8335](tel:+17403878335) for real quotes. It's one free conversation with our Marion or Powell office, Monday through Friday, 9 to 5.

## What Ohio requires. And what we actually recommend.

Ohio requires **25/50/25 liability** and proof of financial responsibility. **Uninsured motorist coverage and PIP are optional** under Ohio law, and both are worth a serious look.

Required by law

$25k / $50k

### Bodily Injury Liability

Pays for injuries you cause to other people: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident. This is the coverage that stands between an at-fault accident and your personal assets, which is why we rarely recommend stopping at the minimum.

Required by law

$25k

### Property Damage Liability

Pays for damage you cause to other people's property: their car, their fence, their garage door. $25,000 doesn't go far if you damage a newer vehicle or two, so a claim above the limit becomes your bill.

Strongly recommended

UM / UIM

### Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist

Covers you and your passengers when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. It's optional in Ohio, which is exactly why it gets skipped. We recommend carrying it, sized to match your own liability limits.

Strongly recommended

Collision

### Collision Coverage

Repairs or replaces your own car after a crash, regardless of fault. Required by every lender on a financed or leased vehicle, and worth carrying on any car you couldn't comfortably replace out of pocket.

Strongly recommended

Comprehensive

### Comprehensive Coverage

Covers what happens when you're not driving: hail from a summer thunderstorm, a limb brought down by straight-line winds, flood water when a creek rises, theft, broken glass, vandalism, fire, and animal strikes. For a car that parks outside, this is the quiet workhorse of the policy.

Worth a look

Med Pay

### PIP & Medical Payments

Personal Injury Protection and medical payments coverage pay medical bills for you and your passengers, no matter who was at fault. Neither is required in Ohio. If your health coverage is thin or your deductible is high, either can be inexpensive protection.

Not covered

App On

### Rideshare & Delivery Driving

Personal policies generally exclude driving for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and other platforms. Ask us about rideshare coverage availability; where it's offered, an endorsement can close the gap. If the app is on, you need to have this conversation.

Not covered

Your Stuff

### Belongings Inside the Car

A laptop stolen from your back seat is not an auto claim. Personal belongings are covered by your [home](https://egoodwininsurance.com/home-insurance) or [renters](https://egoodwininsurance.com/renters-insurance) policy, another reason the bundle works.

Not covered

Wear

### Wear, Tear & Breakdown

Insurance covers sudden, accidental loss, not maintenance. Worn brakes, blown engines, and aging batteries belong to a warranty or a mechanical breakdown plan, not this policy.

### Two required coverages. Six that actually protect you.

We'll build the right stack for your cars and your assets, then shop it across several carriers and compare prices with the discounts you qualify for. Free, with no pressure.

Coverage Basics

## How an Ohio auto policy actually works.

An auto policy is really a stack of separate coverages, each answering a different question. Here's the plain-language version of what each layer does, and how we size it.

### Liability: the coverage that protects everyone else, and you

Liability is the legally required core. Bodily injury liability pays medical bills, lost wages, and legal judgments for people you injure. Property damage liability pays for the cars and property you damage. When a claim exceeds your limits, you're personally on the hook for the rest, and in Ohio's at-fault system that exposure is real: a judgment can reach savings, home equity, and future income.

Our rule of thumb is simple. Your liability limits should reflect what you have to lose, not what the state minimum requires. For most homeowners we quote 100/300/100 or higher, and for families with meaningful assets we talk about pairing auto liability with an [umbrella policy](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote), which adds a layer of protection across home and auto on top of both.

### Collision and comprehensive: the coverages for your own car

Liability never pays for your own vehicle. That's the job of collision and comprehensive, together often called "full coverage." **Collision** handles crash damage, whether you hit another car, a pole, or a curb that came out of nowhere. **Comprehensive** handles nearly everything else: hail, floods, theft, vandalism, glass, fire, falling branches, and deer. In Ohio, summer hail and flash flooding along creeks and rivers are two of the big ones.

Both come with a deductible, the amount you pay before coverage kicks in, and the deductible is your main pricing lever. Raising it from $500 to $1,000 may trim the premium if you have savings to cover the difference. On an older car worth a few thousand dollars, it's also fair to ask whether collision still earns its premium at all. We'll run that math with you honestly, even when the answer lowers our own commission.

### Uninsured motorist: the coverage for other people's bad decisions

You can do everything right and still get hit by someone carrying no insurance, or too little. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage steps into the at-fault driver's shoes and pays for your injuries. Ohio doesn't require it, so plenty of drivers on I-71, I-270 and US-23 go without it, and plenty of at-fault drivers carry only the 25/50/25 minimum. We treat UM/UIM as essential, sized to match your own liability limits.

### The add-ons: useful, but only where they fit

The remaining pieces are situational, and this is where a real agent earns their keep instead of a checkout page upselling everything:

- **Rental reimbursement** pays for a rental car while yours is in the shop. Cheap, and worth it for anyone who can't be without a car for two weeks.

- **Roadside assistance** covers tows, jump starts, and lockouts. Skip it if you already have roadside help through an auto club or your vehicle's warranty.

- **Gap coverage** pays the difference between what you owe on a loan or lease and what the car is worth if it's totaled. Essential on new cars with small down payments; unnecessary once the loan balance drops below the car's value.

- **Rideshare coverage** addresses Uber, Lyft, and delivery driving that personal policies generally exclude. Ask us about rideshare coverage availability before the app goes on. Driving for your own company is different again, and needs [commercial auto](https://egoodwininsurance.com/business-insurance).

None of this needs to be memorized. Bring us your declarations page, tell us how you actually use your cars, and we'll walk the stack together, line by line, in plain English. Then we'll compare what several carriers can do with it.

### Not sure what your current policy actually covers?

Send us your declarations page. We'll read it with you, flag the gaps, and shop the fix across several carriers. No pressure, no jargon.

## Seven honest ways to lower your Ohio premium. Without gutting your protection.

The two biggest levers are **bundling with home or renters** and **shopping your coverage across several carriers** every so often. The rest stack on top. The one move to avoid is cutting liability limits.

1

### Bundle auto with home or renters

A multi-policy discount is one of the most reliable ways to save. Pairing your auto policy with a [home](https://egoodwininsurance.com/home-insurance) or [renters](https://egoodwininsurance.com/renters-insurance) policy may lower what you pay, and it puts your whole plan under one roof with one independent agent who knows the full picture.

2

### Let us re-shop it once a year

Your life changes faster than your policy does: a new commute, a paid-off car, a teen who made the honor roll, a move from Marion to Delaware County. And the insurance market changes too. Once a year, sit down with us (in person in Marion or Powell, or by phone) and we'll re-check your coverages, deductibles and discounts, and compare your policy against our other carriers if the market has moved.

3

### Raise your deductible, if your savings can cover it

Moving collision and comprehensive deductibles from $500 to $1,000 can lower those line items. The right deductible is the biggest number you could pay tomorrow without wincing.

4

### Drop collision on cars that no longer justify it

When a car's value drops to a few thousand dollars, collision coverage can cost more over a few years than the car would ever pay out. We'll tell you when it's time, even though it lowers your bill with us.

5

### Keep a clean record, and keep it cheap

Tickets and at-fault accidents can follow your rate for years. Drive like your premium depends on it, because it does. If you do have a ticket or claim on your record, tell us. Carriers weigh a driving record differently, and that's where comparing several of them helps.

6

### Stack every discount you actually qualify for

Good student, multi-car, safety features, paying in full, and more may be available depending on the carrier and your situation. Discounts are the kind of thing that quietly falls off a policy over the years. Part of your free yearly review is making sure every one you qualify for is applied.

7

### Bundle the rest of the garage

The motorcycle, the boat at Alum Creek Lake, the camper in the side yard: putting them with the same agency as your car and home may add to your multi-policy savings and gives you one number to call when something happens. What doesn't work: quietly cutting liability limits. It saves a few dollars a month and exposes everything you own.

### Want us to run all seven against your current policy?

Bring your declarations page. We'll compare it against what several carriers can offer and show you where the savings may be, and where they aren't. No obligation either way.

## Whatever's in the driveway. We quote it.

Teen drivers, college students, trucks, rideshare gigs, leases, and weekend classics all change how a policy should be built. Tell us how you actually drive and we'll structure it right, then compare carriers.

Adding a teen, or a college student who takes a car to campus, is the biggest rate jump most families ever see. Good student discounts where eligible, the right car assignment, and smart deductibles can soften it.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

[Trucks, EVs & new technology

Full-size pickups are perennial theft targets, and EVs and hybrids can carry higher repair costs. Both change how collision and comprehensive should be structured, and a truck parked outside through summer storm season needs comprehensive most of all.](https://egoodwininsurance.com/quote)

## Ohio auto insurance questions. Straight answers.

What is the minimum car insurance required in Ohio?

Ohio requires liability coverage of at least **$25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident** for bodily injury, plus **$25,000 for property damage**, written as 25/50/25. Ohio raised these minimums from 12.5/25/7.5 in December 2013, and every driver must be able to show proof of financial responsibility.

That satisfies the law, but the minimum can run out fast in a serious accident. Whatever the policy doesn't cover, you can be pursued for personally. If you ever have a question about Ohio's insurance rules, the Ohio Department of Insurance consumer hotline is 800-686-1526.

Is Ohio a no-fault state?

**No.** Ohio is an at-fault, or tort, state. The driver who causes an accident is responsible for the injuries and property damage that follow, and their liability coverage pays those claims.

That's exactly why liability limits matter so much here. Causing a serious accident with thin limits puts your personal assets in the path of the claim.

What does full coverage actually mean?

Full coverage is industry shorthand, not a legal term. It usually means liability plus **collision** (crash damage to your own car) and **comprehensive** (hail, flood, theft, vandalism, glass, fire, animals), and in a well-built policy, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage too.

Lenders require collision and comprehensive on any financed or leased vehicle. On a car you own outright, whether full coverage still makes sense depends on what the car is worth, and we'll run that math with you honestly.

Do I really need uninsured motorist coverage in Ohio?

Ohio doesn't require it. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is optional here, and that's exactly why it gets skipped. In practice it's one of the most important coverages on the policy, because plenty of drivers carry only the 25/50/25 minimum, and some carry nothing at all.

UM/UIM steps into the at-fault driver's shoes and pays for your injuries when they can't. We recommend carrying it and sizing it to match your own liability limits.

What is PIP, and do I need it in Ohio?

**Personal Injury Protection** and medical payments coverage pay your own medical bills after an accident, regardless of fault. Neither is required in Ohio. Both are optional and worth considering.

If you carry strong health insurance, a small amount may be enough. If your health coverage is thin or your deductible is high, it can be inexpensive protection against the gap that matters most when someone in the car is actually hurt. We'll walk through which side of that line you're on.

Does insurance cover hail damage to my car?

**Yes, if your policy includes comprehensive coverage**, minus your deductible. Ohio's spring and summer thunderstorms can bring hail and straight-line winds, and a single storm can dent a car in the driveway or bring a limb down on it.

A liability-only policy pays nothing for hail, theft or flood. If your car parks outside, comprehensive deserves a close look.

Does insurance cover a flooded car?

**Yes, under comprehensive coverage.** A flooded vehicle is a comprehensive claim on your auto policy, not a claim on any flood policy. Creeks and rivers can rise fast in heavy rain, from Alum Creek and Big Walnut Creek to the Olentangy and Scioto, and a car that stalls in moving water can be totaled in minutes. Turn around, don't drown.

Note the split: your car's flood damage is auto comprehensive. Your home and belongings need a separate [NFIP flood policy](https://egoodwininsurance.com/flood-insurance), which we can help you with. One more reason the whole plan belongs with one agency.

How much is car insurance in Ohio?

It depends on you more than on any average. Your ZIP code, commute, driving record, vehicle, household drivers and the coverage you choose all move the number, and each insurance company weighs those factors differently.

That's the advantage of an independent agency. We represent multiple insurance companies, so instead of quoting one price we compare several for your situation. Ballpark yours with our [rate estimator](https://egoodwininsurance.com/#estimator), then call for real quotes.

Does my credit score affect my car insurance?

**It can.** Some insurance companies use a credit-based insurance score as one rating factor, alongside your driving record, vehicle and ZIP code. How much weight it carries varies by company.

What you control is everything around it: keeping a clean record, choosing the right deductible, bundling policies, and letting us compare carriers once a year to make sure your coverage and discounts still fit. That annual review is part of what a local agent is for.

Does my policy cover Uber, Lyft, or DoorDash driving?

Generally **no**. Personal auto policies exclude driving for hire, and the platform's own coverage is thin during the window when your app is on but no ride or delivery is accepted.

Ask us about rideshare coverage availability. Where it's offered, an endorsement can close that gap. If you drive for any app, even occasionally, tell us before you need a claim, not after.

What coverage do I need on a leased or financed car?

Your lender or leasing company will require **collision and comprehensive** in addition to liability, and often caps your deductible at $500 or $1,000.

**Gap coverage** deserves a serious look on newer vehicles. If the car is totaled while you owe more than it's worth, gap pays the difference, so you're not making payments on a car that no longer exists. Once your loan balance drops below the car's value, you can drop it.

How can I lower my car insurance in Ohio?

The biggest levers, roughly in order: bundle auto with your [home](https://egoodwininsurance.com/home-insurance) or [renters](https://egoodwininsurance.com/renters-insurance) policy, let us shop your coverage across several carriers, raise your deductible if you have savings to cover it, drop collision on a car that isn't worth much anymore, and make sure every discount you qualify for is actually applied.

What doesn't work is quietly cutting your liability limits. That saves a few dollars a month and exposes everything you own. There's almost always a smarter place to trim, and finding it is what we do.

My son or daughter is taking a car to college. How should they be insured?

Tell us where the car is actually kept. A student driving a household car is often listed on the family policy, but where the car is garaged during the semester, whether it's titled to the student, and who drives it all affect how it should be written.

Good student discounts may be available for eligible drivers, and a car parked on or near campus deserves a close look at comprehensive for theft and vandalism. Call [(740) 387-8335](tel:+17403878335) and we'll set it up correctly.
